Ready for Your First Bridal Fitting? Here's What You Can Expect

The moment you’ve been waiting for is finally here: your first bridal fitting! You’ve picked the perfect gown, and now it’s time to make sure it fits like a dream. But what exactly happens at a bridal fitting? Whether you're excited or a little nervous, knowing what to expect can make the experience much smoother and more enjoyable. In this blog, we’ll walk you through the entire process so you feel prepared and confident. At Joli Bride, we’re dedicated to making sure every bride’s fitting experience is as magical as her big day. Keep in mind any changes made to your dress will incur an additional cost, please discuss with your consultants and questions you may have.

Arrive Prepared for Your Appointment

Before you even step foot into the fitting room, it’s essential to come prepared. Bring the right undergarments, shoes, and any accessories you plan on wearing on your wedding day. These items can drastically affect how your dress fits, so having them with you ensures an accurate fitting. At Joli Bride, our consultants always recommend trying on your dress with everything you’ll be wearing, from heels to your veil, so you can see the full look.  If you have heirloom pieces you would like to add onto your gown, beading or lace, please bring it with you to the first fitting for us to collaborate how to incorporate them.

Communication Is Key

During your fitting, don’t hesitate to speak up! If something doesn’t feel right, or you have concerns about the fit, let your seamstress know. This is your dress, and it should make you feel comfortable and beautiful. The consultants at Joli Bride are here to listen and help you create your dream look, so clear communication is essential to getting exactly what you want.  Your first fitting is a collaborative experience, we look to you for your vision, and we are here to make that dream a reality.  We are happy to discuss any custom additions, sleeves, straps, a jacket or cape.

How Long Will It Take?

Each fitting usually lasts about an hour, depending on the complexity of the alterations. Your seamstress will take notes, and pin adjustments, and may even show you fabric swatches if additional materials are needed. Don’t worry if things seem slow; this is all part of ensuring the dress is flawless. Joli Bride advises scheduling your first fitting at least three months before your wedding, giving plenty of time for all necessary alterations.  Keep in mind you will have more than one fitting, usually 2 or 3 depending on custom work, and or the complexity of your alterations.  Your consultant will discuss the timeline with you on your first visit.

Be Ready for Minor Changes

Don’t be alarmed if your dress needs significant changes during the first fitting. It’s common for wedding dresses to require adjustments in length, waist, bust, and even the shape of the gown to match your body perfectly. The team at Joli Bride takes pride in making sure the alterations blend seamlessly with the original design, enhancing your gown’s overall look.

Trust the Process

While it can be tempting to feel nervous about how everything will come together, trust the professionals. Bridal alterations are highly detailed, but your seamstress is experienced in working with delicate fabrics and intricate designs. At Joli Bride, we have years of experience making brides feel stunning in their gowns, and we’ll ensure your dress looks and feels incredible.

Your first bridal fitting is an exciting milestone on the road to your wedding day. By arriving prepared, communicating openly, and trusting the process, you'll feel confident that your gown will be perfect.
